creating gold

My very first quilt pattern – Heart Rate Quilt – is now available to purchase!
You can find my Heart Rate pattern on Etsy here, or on Payhip here. It’s a modern quilt pattern made up of flying geese blocks that create a set of interlocking hearts and is great for confident beginners and advanced quilters alike.
I had wanted to bring this out in time for Valentine’s Day, but it took longer than I thought to make sure all the instructions for the different versions made sense to people other than me! I thought pattern writing would be easy to get started with, a bit like the “write instructions on how to make a bowl of cereal” exercises we had to do in Elementary School! It has come with a pretty big learning curve, but hopefully I’ll learn more as I go and get better at it.
The Cover Quilt
For my very first pattern I wanted to make something special so picked out a set of Pure Solids from Art Gallery Fabrics to make the multicolour version. Art Gallery Fabrics have the nicest feel to them, they’re a tighter weave than normal quilting cotton and use a finer yarn which makes such a lovely fabric to work with! I got my fabrics from Cow and Giraffe who is a really lovely company in the UK that has the full range of Pure Solids! (If you use this affiliate link to order from them you’ll get £5 off your first order and I’ll get £5 off my next!)
I fell in love with the Tiger Lily colour and decided to take inspiration from a photo I took of Osaka Castle since the organge reminded me of the leaves.
The colours are:

For the back I had to have the Perfectly Imperfect print from the Luna & Laurel range also from Art Gallery Fabrics. I also added another print from the same range to be a frame on either side of the faces so I didn’t have to worry about pattern matching the line drawings!

I quilted it using Aurifil 40wt in Black and Light Sand using a walking foot on my domestic machine. I was inspired by the boomerang and interlocking diamonds patterns from the book Walk by Jacquie Gering. It’s an amazing resource for people that like to quilt their own quilts using a walking foot! I have Walk 2.0 as well and it’s also amazing!
Once it was finished I managed to get my husband to head out to a local path for some photos. We only had to climb one gate, and thankfully could leave the sheep alone in their fields! There are loads of lambs about now so I was glad we didn’t have to climb into a sheep field to try to get “the shot”. (We did leave Tally at home, she’s either not a fan of sheep, or too much a fan of sheep and wouldn’t have left them alone to their grass.)

Heart Rate has two different sizes baby (40″x40″) and throw (64″x72″), and four different colour options that work with both sizes – two colour, ombre, multicolour, and fat quarter friendly. Here are some mock ups to show you what they look like:
